Self-Portrait with Soft Hat

1894: Bridgestone Museum of Art, Tokyo

There are small areas in this painting that are uncovered and here it is clearly not for any other reason than that Cézanne could not decide what to place there in each location. He has worked steadily on the head which is, apart from an area near the ear, completely realised. The coat is, however, unresolved: the shape of the arm is integrated but its identity is not and, since he could not resolve it, he stopped.
